The richness and magnificence of the Eastern board of Tasmania is exemplified in the northern township of Scamander. On a site of some 50 hectares the Scamander Sanctuary proposal is a "first " for bringing to existence the protection of an environmentally sensitive heritage listed laggon site via a development process

Scamander Sanctuary is a sustainable development that is able to integrate environmental and site features to create a sense of place and allows exposure and access via a management plan to ensure the protection of the sensitive coastal environment.

Land uses will be integrated to form a combination of:

  • An environmental sanctuary, through the protection and interpretation of wetland areas.
  • Ecotourism, through the provision of beach retreat guest houses.
  • Econotourism, through the provision of a cabin and caravan park.
  • Edutourism, through the provision of a surf instruction camp.
  • Freehold lot development, through the subdivision of the land.

Key Features fo this development proposal are to :

  • Create a series of 'special' places.
  • Create a system of sensitively placed discovery walks.
  • Establish a variety of places of accommodation.
  • Create a system of sustainable communities.
  • Establish Management Plan for the sensitive coastal environment.
